What to Do After Indoor Water Damage

Prioritize personal safety, stop the source when possible and know when a water loss needs professional extraction or remediation.

General educational information. Material condition and safety always take priority over a generic instruction.

The safest first response depends on the water source, electrical conditions and structural stability. Do not enter an unsafe area to save furnishings.

Protect people first

Avoid standing water near electrical hazards, sewage, sagging ceilings or structural damage. Contact emergency services or appropriate utilities when needed.

Stop the source if safe

A supply valve or appliance may be shut off only when it can be reached safely. Document the visible area for insurance and service discussions.

Describe the loss clearly

Share the source, affected materials, approximate area and when it began. Contaminated water requires specialized controls.
